Black Tie Comedy Awards 2009

29th November 2009 - Indigo O2, London

Finally. After year’s of postponements and an earlier postponement last August 2009, Black Britain finally got another comedy awards ceremony underway. And even then, the awards destined never to be, suffered further unforeseen delays with a car on fire in one of London’s major arteries, the Blackwall tunnel, causing huge tail backs, delays for attendees and comedians and forcing some to give up and head home.

Starting over an hour late because of this, for those who made it it was well worth being there as it was a tightly delivered, compact show featuring some of the best talent around.Compered by Kojo and guest, the show opened with a fine dancing display by a “Diversity” style dance troupe.

Awards were presented by Danielle Brown, little sister of former Spice Girl, Mel B, as well as esteemed actors Dona Croll and Rudolph Walker.

During the interval, Tiemo Entertainment’s CEO Michael Peters spoke to BBC Radio London presenter Dotun Adebayo live on air during his popular, ‘Dotun on Sunday’, show, giving Dotun and listeners a flavour of the award show they were missing.
Dotun was particularly intrigued by the winner of the Best Newcomer award, going to Kevin J. Notable for him being a white Londoner. Michael explained, “Funny as it may sound, Kevin J is very funny and along with fellow white Londoner Jamie Howard, has been very warmly received and embraced by black audiences and comedians alike on the black comedy circuit. I think both are a product of their environment, having grown up in and been educated in predominantly black neighbourhoods and Schools, which means African and Caribbean accents seem to come quite naturally to them, though of course it is a little strange to see that juxtaposition of white person/black accent. Fortunately for both of them they pull it off quite hiliariously.”

Comedians present, some of whom were nominees, included Annette Fagon, Glenda Jaxon, Kevin J, Prince Abdi, Felicity Ethnic, Eddie Kadi, Quincy, Slim, Richard Blackwood and Miss London. All in all a very good night.

And the winners were

·         Best newcomer - Kevin J
·         Best Female - Glenda Jaxson
·         Best Male – Slim
·         Best International Comedian - Chris Rock
·         Best TV Performance - Slim (MTV)
·         Best Comedy Promoter – Harmony Productions
·         Outstanding Contribution - The Real McCoy
